Chemistry
Chemistry
Chemistry is the branch of science that studies the nature, structure, composition, properties and uses of various forms of matter and changes which they undergo under certain condition.
Chemistry is a branch of science that deals with chemical elements and compounds, and how they work together and change. In other words, chemistry is the branch of science that study fundamental properties of matter and chemical reactions.
Chemistry occupies an intermediate position between physics and biology. It is sometimes called the central science because it provides a foundation for understanding both basic and applied scientific disciplines at a fundamental level. For example, chemistry explains aspects of plant chemistry (botany), the formation of igneous rocks (geology), how atmospheric ozone is formed and how environmental pollutants are degraded (ecology), the properties of the soil on the moon (cosmochemistry), how medications work (pharmacology), and how to collect DNA evidence at a crime scene (forensics).
Branches of Chemistry
There are three major branches of Chemistry. They are;
- Organic chemistry
- Inorganic chemistry
- Physical chemistry
Types of Chemistry
There are several types of chemistry. Few of them are:
- Analytical chemistry: Analytical chemistry looks at which chemicals are in things. For example, looking at how much arsenic is in food.
- Organic chemistry: Organic chemistry studies things that have carbon in them. For example, making acetylene.
- Inorganic chemistry: Inorganic chemistry studies things that do not have carbon in them. One example is making an integrated circuit.
- Theoretical chemistry: Theoretical chemistry tries to explain chemical data with mathematics and computers.
- polymer chemistry. Polymer chemistry is the principle of Chemistry that studies plastics. One example is making nylon. Because plastics are made of carbon, polymer chemistry is part of organic chemistry.
- Biochemistry: This looks at the chemistry of living things. An example would be seeing how arsenic poisons people. Biochemistry is also part of organic chemistry. There are many other small branches of chemistry.
