How to Achieve 2NF

  1. The table must not have any partial dependencies. This means that for any non-prime attribute (an attribute that is not a part of the table's primary key), it must depend on the entire primary key for its existence.
  2. The table must not have any transitive dependencies. This means that for any non-prime attribute, it must not depend on another non-prime attribute.

To understand these conditions, let's consider an example. Suppose we have a table called "Orders" that stores information about customer orders. The table has the following attributes:

  • Order ID (primary key)
  • Customer ID
  • Product ID
  • Quantity
  • Price

In this table, the Order ID is the primary key and the other attributes are dependent on it. The Customer ID attribute is also dependent on the Product ID attribute, since the customer can only order a specific product. This means that the table has a transitive dependency and is not in 2NF.

To bring the table into 2NF, we would need to break it into two separate tables: one for orders and one for customers. The orders table would contain the Order ID, Product ID, Quantity, and Price attributes. The customers table would contain the Customer ID and any other customer-specific information. This way, the Customer ID attribute is dependent only on the primary key (in this case, the Customer ID itself) and the table meets the requirements for 2NF.
