Vocabulary Development: Engineering
Engineering is the application of scientific, economic, social, and practical knowledge in order to design, build, and maintain structures, machines, devices, systems, materials and processes. Engineers use the principles of science and mathematics to develop cost-effective solutions to technical problems. They apply these principles to design and develop new products, processes and systems, as well as to improve existing ones. Engineers work in many different fields, including civil, mechanical, electrical, aerospace, automotive, manufacturing, and software engineering, to name a few. There are many different disciplines within engineering, each with its own set of specialized knowledge, tools, and techniques. Engineers play a vital role in shaping the world we live in by developing new technologies, designing and building infrastructure, and improving the safety and quality of life for people around the world.
