Carbon is a solid and a non-metal. It is a member of group IV(4) element on the periodic table. It exhibit the oxidation state of +2 and +4 in it's compound. The pure element rarely have occur naturally as diamond or graphite. But coal and impure forms are very common.
It also occur combined with other element such as carbon(IV) oxide, hydrogen in natural gas e.g methane, petroleum And wood. It occur mostly in compound like your troxocarbonate(IV) such as your chalk, limestone to a wide variety of organic chemicals which include hydrocarbons, plastics as well as fats and protein.
Organic chemistry is known as the chemistry of carbon and it's compounds other than the oxides and troxocarbonate (IV) salt.
